Breast Asymmetry

Breast Asymmetry is usually the term for describing breasts that differ in size by at least one cup size.

The vast majority of women have breast asymmetry, but for some the difference is so pronounced it can have a negative impact on their health and well being and can be a distressing problem to cope with.

What’s involved in an operation for Breast Asymmetry?

Depending on your circumstances, the results you wish to achieve will depend on how your consultant plastic surgeon performs surgery.

At McIndoe Surgical Centre you can be confident that your surgeon will discuss all the options available to you in detail.

If you would like smaller breasts then your surgeon may perform a unilateral breast reduction on the heavier breast by removing some of the breast tissue. If you would prefer to have both breasts smaller then a bilateral breast reduction would be performed and varying amounts of breast tissue taken from both breasts to achieve a balanced looking chest.

If you would like a larger breast or breasts then your surgeon would use implants. This is known as breast enlargement or enhancement and helps in leveling the single or two breasts. There is a wide variety of breast implants available and your surgeon will help you choose the look you desire.

For varying reasons one of your breasts might be sagging while the other one is in place, and a breast lift (also referred to as a mastopexy procedure) may be performed; this lifts the breast and positions it in line with the other one.
A lifted breast will always appear bigger hence the difference in size will have been dealt with. A breast uplift may be performed in conjunction with a breast reduction or breast enlargement procedure.
